The 4-eye rule
Never accept a QC photo you’ve looked at only once. The 4-eye rule: look, look away for thirty seconds, look again. If either pass raises a concern, escalate to a second photo or reject. Anchoring bias is real — you’ll rationalize a photo you’ve stared at for two minutes.
The defect taxonomy
Objective decisions require categorized inputs. Every QC photo should be scored against these six axes:
- Structural. Stitching alignment, seam symmetry, panel joins.
- Print / embroidery. Sharpness, alignment, color accuracy.
- Material. Weave, weight, hand-feel proxy (drape in photo).
- Hardware. Zippers, buttons, buckles, eyelets.
- Trim. Labels, tags, patches, drawstring tips.
- Finish. Glue residue, loose threads, packaging condition.

Reject thresholds
A single yellow flag on any axis is usually recoverable — request an additional photo. Two yellows on one axis or one red flag anywhere is a reject. Don’t rationalize; the seller will send another item without pushback if the reject is calmly and specifically worded.
What separates a good QC photo from a useless one
- Natural light or 5000K daylight LED.
- Two photos minimum — front and detail.
- Ruler or coin in one shot for scale reference.
- Neutral background so you can spot color drift.
Why the finder matters more than the sheet
A brilliant Hipobuy spreadsheet listing with mediocre QC is worse than an okay listing with excellent QC coverage. The community photos are the ground truth. If a listing has no community QC and you’re the first — proceed carefully or wait for someone else to go first.
